Childhood Trauma Q&A

What is childhood trauma?

Childhood trauma refers to any scary, violent, dangerous, or life-threatening event that happens to anyone up to the age of 18 years.

Your child may experience the trauma firsthand, or they may see or hear another person go through a traumatic event. Either way, they can suffer the emotional fallout.

Examples of traumatic events that affect children include:

  • Child abuse or neglect
  • Serious illness or injury
  • Sexual abuse
  • School or community violence
  • Violence in the home
  • Death of a family member or friend
  • Bullying including cyberbullying
  • Car, bike, or other accident
  • Natural or man-made disaster
  • Homelessness
  • Living in poverty
  • Victim of a crime

Parents with a substance use or mental health disorder can also cause childhood trauma.

What is the long-term effect of childhood trauma?

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study discovered that 65% of children experience at least one adverse event during their childhood, and 40% have two or more traumatic experiences.

When children are exposed to adverse experiences, they don’t simply outgrow the trauma, especially if they suffered through multiple traumatic events.

Instead, they have a significantly higher risk for mental health disorders, behavioral problems, and physical problems such as cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases.

What symptoms indicate childhood trauma?

Parents and caretakers should be aware of the symptoms that indicate their child has been traumatized:

  • Clinging to a parent or caregiver
  • Crying or whimpering
  • Having nightmares or insomnia
  • Becoming irritable or angry
  • Struggling with school
  • Complaining of physical problems
  • Developing new and unfounded fears
  • Becoming depressed or anxious
  • Returning to behaviors from a younger age (thumb sucking or bedwetting)

Teens may start using alcohol or drugs, stop socializing, or become disruptive or destructive.

How can hypnotherapy treat childhood trauma?

Loretta has a special gift for working with children. She quickly establishes a connection, gains their trust, and helps them deal with their trauma.

She also works with adults who experienced childhood trauma that wasn’t treated. Even if your trauma happened many years ago, you can still suffer the results, such as ongoing PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and poor physical health.

Through the trance-like state that she induces during hypnotherapy, Loretta gently guides you through your trauma and suggests new ways to deal with your challenges. Through hypnotherapy, you can effectively change your emotions and reactions and regain control.
