Panic Attacks Q&A

What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is a strong wave of fear that’s unexpected, sudden, and so intense that it’s debilitating. Panic attacks usually reach their peak in about 10 minutes and end within 20-30 minutes. They can happen anywhere and at any time, even while you’re sleeping.

People who are healthy and happy can experience a panic attack. Panic attacks may also occur due to an underlying disorder such as depression or a phobia.

You may experience one or two panic attacks and never have another. Or you could have recurring panic attacks. While most panic attacks strike out of the blue and without an obvious trigger, recurring panic attacks are triggered by a specific situation.

If you have numerous attacks or you obsessively worry about having another attack, you may have a condition called panic disorder.

What symptoms develop during a panic attack?

Panic attacks cause such extreme physical symptoms that many people say they felt like they were going to die from a heart attack. If you have a panic attack, you experience symptoms such as:

  • Pounding, fast heartbeat
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal pain
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Chills or heat sensations
  • Tingling and numbness

People with recurring panic attacks often change their daily routine and behave differently in their effort to prevent future panic attacks.

How does hypnotherapy treat panic attacks?

During hypnotherapy, Loretta guides you into a relaxed, altered state of consciousness called a trance. While you’re in a trance, your subconscious mind is alert and open to suggestions.

After you reach the trance state, Loretta can help you focus on the sensations, emotions, and thoughts associated with your panic attacks. She can then help you release your panic and reprogram your responses through suggestions and tips to help self-regulate your anxiety.

For example, Loretta may say that you feel safe despite uncomfortable anxiety or suggest that you take deep breaths at the start of a panic attack.

These suggestions go to your alert subconscious, which can use the information to change your conscious thoughts and physical response.
